My early degree project investigations and discussions with my instructor revealed that I would like my project to be about music especially teaching music to children. In my opinion music is very important to our spirit and our mind. It is especially valuable for children to learn music at an early age. Fundamental skills learned through the discipline of music transfer to study skills, communication skills, and cognitive skills. Many studies have been done and the findings show that musical training can enhance brain function. Research teams exploring the link between music and intelligence reported that music training is dramatically enhancing children’s abstract reasoning skills, the skills necessary for learning math and science.

Our schools and culture focus most of their attention on linguistic and logical-mathematical intelligence and not enough on music and other arts. It is crucial to introduce music at an early age. Unfortunately music classes are limited in our school system today. My goal is to create something that can be useful in teaching basic skills in the discipline of music in an engaging and effective way. Ideally I would kile to create something that could be easily accessible for anyone who is interested in learning music. There are many different ways of teaching music. I am somewhat familiar with the Kodály Method and the Dalcroze Method of teaching. I plan to research more and familiarize myself with the Dalcroze Eurhythmics approach that is offered at my local music school and base my project on that method of teaching music.

What is the Dalcroze Method?

The Dalcroze Method known as Eurhythmics is a unique approach to music learning developed by the Swiss composer and educator Emile Jaques-Dalcroze. The most significant innovation that Dalcroze brought to the learning process is the recognition that experiencing meaningful rhythmic movement associated with ear-training and improvisation facilitates and reinforces the understanding of music concepts, enhances musicianship and focuses awareness on the physical demands of artistic performance. It is fun and interactive.

Dalcroze Eurhythmics utilizes the physical response to music, redefining the coordination between ear, brain, and body to develop musicianship in a joyful and stimulating way. Dalcroze training has three interrelated branches of study: eurhythmics, solfčge and improvisation. I find all of them equally important however I would like to focus on the lessons for the very beginners, 5 and 6 years old kids, which makes me think that eurhythmics would be the best choice for this project to explore.
